Marcus Homer Merriman was born on May 3, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He pursued his early education at Bowdoin College in Maine before continuing advanced studies in France and the United Kingdom. His academic journey eventually led him to the Institute of Historical Research in London, where he completed his doctoral work under the supervision of Professor Stanley Bindoff.
In 1964, Merriman began a long and distinguished career at Lancaster University, where he served in multiple academic roles over four decades. He rose through the ranks from lecturer to senior lecturer in history, dedicating his professional life to teaching and researching early modern European history, with a particular focus on Anglo-Scottish relations during the 16th century.
