According to the National Park Service and the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, the man was in the Merced River above Nevada Fall when he was caught by a powerful current and pulled downstream toward the edge of the 594-foot waterfall. Emergency personnel responded to the scene after witnesses reported the unfolding emergency.
Officials have not yet released the victim’s full identity or hometown, but multiple reports confirm he was a young adult visiting the popular hiking area near the Mist Trail. The area above Nevada Fall is known for deceptively calm-looking waters that can quickly become dangerous due to strong hidden currents and steep drop-offs.
Witness accounts described chaotic moments as bystanders attempted to assist. One trained lifeguard who was nearby reportedly entered the water in an attempt to rescue those caught in the current but was overwhelmed by the force of the river. She was later pulled to safety by another hiker using a makeshift rescue aid, according to local reports.
